Gallery Invitation

An exclusive invitation to our jewellery gallery

In our last newsletter we forecast the opening of our gallery – a showcase of the artistic talent and artisan skills of our workshop team.

We are delighted to announce that the gallery will open on Monday 9 December. We extend a welcome to all our loyal clients to visit in the week following (with three evening opportunities) to celebrate this important milestone.

The gallery will showcase a wondrous display of very special blue gemstones

The themes of our first exhibition revolve around the colour blue and ‘eclipse’. We featured blue gemstones in our ‘Gemmology Corner’ article in our last newsletter (click here to read the article) – the gallery will showcase a wondrous display of very special blue gemstones.

Visitors in our opening week will have the opportunity of open access to our studio workshop

A few years ago, we staged an ‘in-house’ competition to judge which staff member could design the best piece of jewellery based on the concept of an eclipse. We could never decide whose work was the best – so we resolved to manufacture each design to let others judge. Since then, Kylie and Yuki have added to the collection by contributing their own designs. Visitors in our opening week will have the opportunity of open access to our studio workshop – a chance to see how jewellery is made by hand and to talk to our talented jewellers. Naturally the pieces entered in the Australasian Jewellery Design Awards will be on show. Interestingly, Eleanor’s entry gives a sneak preview of the next theme that will be featured at our gallery – ‘Flora’.

We urge you to put aside a half hour in the week beginning Monday 9 December. Although we see your visits as an informal drop-in, if you did wish to discuss any jewellery matters during your visit, it might be wise to ring on 03 9650 3830 to give us a little notice. For those who find it difficult to fit their tour into normal work-day times, we intend to extend our opening hours to 7:00pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (11th to 13th of December).

Blue Gemstones

Different types of blue gemstones

Search the internet for ‘blue gemstones’ and you will find a list of at least 33 stones ranging in alphabetical order from agate to zircon, but from these you might only recognise six or seven. In our June 2007 issue we featured 20 gems which had blue as the dominant colour.

Not all blue gemstones are the same

In this article we will feature the most commonly recognised of these stones in order of the ‘hardness’ (or wearability) – in other words those most suitable for jewellery. The globally recognised system of measuring gemstone hardness is known as the Mohs’ scale (named after Friedrich Mohs, a mineralogist who invented a scale of hardness based on the ability of one mineral to scratch another.

There are ten minerals in Mohs scale, from the ‘softest (1)talc, (2)gypsum, (3)calcite, (4)fluorite, (5)apatite, (6)feldspar, (7)quartz, (8)topaz, (9)corundum, to the hardest, (10)diamond.

Here are some of the most common gemstones:

Sapphire  (9.0)  the richest, saturated blue

Blue Gemstone - Ceylon Sapphire                                  Blue Gemstones - Australian Sapphire

Ceylon sapphire                                           Australian sapphire

Blue is by far the most popular colour for sapphires, but they can be almost any colour, including yellow, green, white, colourless, pink, orange, brown and purple.

Topaz (8.0)    translucent, from very light to medium blue

Blue Gemstones - London Blue Topaz                                  Blue Gemstones - Swiss Blue Topaz

London blue topaz                                  Swiss blue topaz

The two most popular treated topaz. Swiss Blue is bright blue with a light tone and light to moderate saturation. London Blue is dark blue with a moderate to dark tone and saturation.

Aquamarine (7.5 – 8.0)   light translucent blue

Blue Gemstone - Aquamarine

Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family  (which includes emerald) and ranges in colour from an almost colourless pale blue to blue-green. The most prized colour is a deep-blue aqua.

Zircon (7.5)    medium to dark translucent blue

Blue Gemstones - Zircon

Zircon is routinely heat treated. This has two effects on the gem: It alters the colour to colourless, blue or golden (the most preferred colours for zircon) and orange to red colours.

Tourmaline  (7.0 – 7.5)      shades of light to dark blue

Blue Gemstones - Tourmaline

Found in Brazil, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Kenya and in the USA. This variety of tourmaline comes in various shades, including a clear blue colour.

Compared to the other varieties, the blue stone is quite rare.

Tanzanite (6.0 – 6.5)    dark translucent violet blue

Blue Gemstones - Tanzanite

First discovered in 1967 in Tanzania, East Africa. It is part of the zoisite mineral species and is only found in East Africa. Tanzanite is very rarely a pure blue and usually exhibits rich purple overtones.

Lapis Lazuli (5.0 – 5.5)   medium rich blue

Blue Gemstones - Lapis Lazuli

Sometimes with a hint of violet. Its value decreases with the presence of white patches (calcite), while small veins of pyrite are often prized.

Spinel  (8.0)     translucent medium violet-blue

Blue Gemstones - Spinel

A favourite of gem dealers and collectors on account of its brilliance, hardness and wide range of spectacular colours. Beautiful blue tones, called cobalt spinel are very rare.

Agate  (7.0)     a soft blue

Blue Gemstones - Agate

Variety of chalcedony formed from layers of quartz that usually show vari-coloured bands.

Meet the staff – Peter Bird

My earliest memories of Abrecht Bird was working as a messenger boy during school holidays.

I was born and bread in Blackburn in the ‘olden’ days at a time when there were more empty paddocks there than houses. Aside from frequent discussions of the jewellery industry at our family dinner table, my earliest memories of the business were working as the messenger boy during school holidays. However, I did not seriously entertain the idea of joining the family firm as a career.

I chose to make my own way  – beginning work with the Commercial Bank of Australia and attending Melbourne University at night as a part time student. I joined a stock broking firm and after spending a few years in administration, on my 21st birthday I was appointed as an operator on the trading floor , an extremely exciting and demanding position.

The difficulties of juggling work with my university study became too onerous so I decided to take a year’s leave of absence to complete my Commerce course as a full time student.

My outside interests were centred around sport – cricket, football and golf until surfing became a dominating influence, which eventually overrode my earlier career choices. In order to move to the coast, I added a Diploma of Education to my Commerce degree and became a teacher at Foster High School.

Although I loved the job, the lure of the waves and letters from surfing mates overseas were too enticing and in 1978 (after marrying my wife Sally) we took off to Bali, surfboard in tow, with the view of travelling for 12 months. What a lifestyle! The best waves were often found in remote parts of Asia and Africa where we lived in tiny villages in places such as Sri Lanka, South Africa, Morocco and Sumatra. The year away turned into 3 ½ , but eventually our funds were exhausted and we began to think of returning home.

In a particularly well-timed letter, my father invited me to join the family business, and after contemplating the prospect in our tree-house room in Nias (Sumatra), I decided to give it a go.

The beauty of gemstones and jewellery design added another highly pleasurable layer to the normal stimulation of business.

I immediately found the multifaceted nature of the jewellery industry to be incredibly stimulating and I was eager to improve my knowledge, studying gemmology, diamond grading and valuing. The beauty of gemstones and jewellery design added another highly pleasurable layer to the normal stimulation of business.

I travelled extensively to service our customers in all major cities and towns around Australia and developed a relationship as agent for a major German manufacturer (OE Design based in Penang, Malaysia).

I achieved tremendous fulfilment from the work, but the business lifestyle came to an abrupt end when I was the victim of a well-planned robbery by a South American criminal gang who were ‘visiting’ Australia. Unharmed this time, the risks associated with travelling with cases full of high-value negotiable merchandise could no longer be ignored and reluctantly the family made a decision to discontinue this style of business.

It was at this point we made the decision to link up with long time friendly competitor, Fred Robert Abrecht. to form our current business – Abrecht Bird Jewellers.

So far, none of my sons are queuing up to take over the reins as our fifth generation. My first two sons, David and Chris, are qualified builders and obviously prefer to work outside rather than at a jewellery bench. Twins Dan and Josh enjoy their work in the food industry, Dan in vegetable produce, Josh as a Chef.

Although I missed the relationships formed with our retailer customers over past decades, I soon came to enjoy the chance to assist our growing list of private clients – sharing in their happy times and producing pieces of jewellery that delighted.

Cleaning and checking your jewellery

It is so important to have your jewellery checked at least once a year to ensure it is safe. The metal jewellery is made of wears down over time and should be checked so stones are not lost or become loose. We encourage all our clients to visit us at least yearly to have their rings and jewellery checked and cleaned.

This is a recent before and after image of a clients ring. The claws had worn down so much she was at risk of loosing her stones. Luckily she brought it in for her annual clean and check.

If you receive our newsletter we encourage you to take advantage of our clean and polish service. Not only for piece of mind, but to ensure your heirloom jewellery lasts for years to come.

Diamonds – A symbol of love and romance

Diamonds – A symbol of love and romance

Diamonds – A symbol of love and romance

Diamond – A symbol of love and romance

A diamond is the classic symbol of love and romance.  A timeless gift for a special celebration or simply a declaration of your love.

Diamonds are the ideal symbol of commitment

Whether it be a gift of a pendant, earrings or an engagement ring, diamonds have been associated with love and romance for centuries.

Durable and a gemstone on the market with the best ‘sparkle’ and ‘brilliance’, diamonds are the prefect choice for a stone that lasts a lifetime. Due to it’s extreme hardness, diamonds have the potential to become heirloom jewellery to last generations.

Value of diamonds

Diamonds come in variety of colours from pink and blue to yellow, brown, black and of course colourless. Some are rarer than others with pinks and blues the most highly prized. Pink diamonds have certainly increased in value due to their limited quantity. Argyle diamond mine in Western Australia (due to close in 2020) is the largest supplier to the world. Yellows and browns are less expensive but depending on the depth of colour can achieve a premium price. Blacks are the least expensive and are quite often heat treated to enhance the colour.

Diamonds Versatility

Due to the choice of colour, size, clarity and cut, diamonds can cater for all designs. Whether you choose an engagement three stone ring, a solitaire, a pair of earrings or a pendant there is an option to reflect your style and budget.

Abrecht Bird are specialists in custom made hand crafted jewellery. All our creations are made in our onsite workshop by qualified and skilled Jewellers and designers. Let us help you create the diamond jewellery to symbolise your special occasion. Make an appointment today 03 9650 3830 or email us info@abrecht.com.au

Argyle diamond mine to close 2020

Argyle diamond mine

The Argyle diamond mine in the remote East Kimberley region of Western Australia is owned and operated by Rio Tinto and has been operating since 1983. It has produced more than 800 million carats of rough diamonds and is one of the world’s largest suppliers of diamonds and the world’s largest supplier of natural coloured diamonds.

Argyle to close by 2020

The diamond industry is soon set to change however, as Argyle is due to close by 2020 due to the low proportion of gem-quality diamonds now available.

Diamonds from Argyle will see a significant increase in price

As a result coloured diamonds (pink and cognac colours) from Argyle as well as colourless will see a significant increase in value once the mine has ceased production.

We are delighted to announce that we have secured a source of diamonds that are guaranteed to be of Australian origin. Each stone comes with a certificate of authenticity, a GIA grading certificate and is laser inscribed. These stones won’t be around for long.

Call us today to make an appointment and select your own Australian diamond before they disappear.

Personalise your own engagement ring

Looking to make your engagement ring extra special? Why not contribute to making the ring!

Give your engagement ring a personal touch by starting the process of making your own engagement ring.

What is involved in the process of hand making an engagement ring?

The process starts with a single 6mm square bar of metal and is reduced in rolling mills to a desired thickness. Under the guidance of our jewellers, roll down your own gold to the required thickness of your custom designed engagement ring and anneal the metal (the next process to increase malleability).

Here is one of our recent clients rolling down the metal to the desired thickness to be used in his custom designed piece. A personal touch to make that moment even more special.

Call and make an appointment 03 9650 3830 or email us  info@abrecht.com.au and start making yours today.

Meet the staff – Yuki Mathwin

I grew up living in Middle Park, then in Eden NSW and finished my high school education in Mentone. When I reached adulthood, I moved to Sydney and then Currumbin, on the southern end of the Gold Coast. It’s fair to say I moved around, but I am definitely a Melbournian through and through. Currently I feel I get the best of both worlds as I now live on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula and work in the city! I love the hustle and bustle of the city, it never sleeps, but I also love going home to my family every day.

Travelling has been a huge part of my life and I have always loved exploring different cultures, landscapes and especially food! Trekking to the base camp of Mount Everest and backpacking around a lot of South America have definitely been highlights. I encourage anyone to step outside their comfort zone and explore the world too.

Finding a career in jewellery has also been a huge adventure for me. When my husband proposed, not only did I fall in love with my engagement ring, my curiosity got the better of me. I just had to know how it was made. That was the beginning of my fascination with the engineering side of jewellery manufacture. I was 35 years old when I finally decided what I wanted to be when I grow up. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than to create something with my hands and my previous corporate jobs just weren’t giving me the same joy. It wasn’t until I picked up my first piece of metal and a saw frame that I instantly knew this was the job for me. Since that day, I have been on a huge ride.

Seven years on and I have been extremely fortunate to win some awards. I was Apprentice of the Year three years in a row, I won the apprentice category in a jewellery design competition for two consecutive years, but the one I am most proud of is winning Most Outstanding Apprentice Award at Melbourne Polytechnic in 2016.

As I embark on a new adventure at Abrecht Bird Jewellers, I still pinch myself every day. Not only do I work alongside some incredibly talented people, I have also found myself surrounded by a team of likeminded and supportive people who hold the same values: quality craftsmanship, honesty and integrity, using old-fashioned techniques in timeless design, to name a few. Each and every piece we make is made with love.

Life for me is one big adventure and I just LOVE to go on adventures.

My life started in July 1939 in Wellington NZ after my parents moved there from Melbourne.

It wasn’t long before the lure of Australia brought us back across the Tasman and we settled in Sydney.

My school days were dominated by sport (though somehow I did manage to get through to Year 12 and obtain a certificate to show that I had learnt something.)

In 1957 I won the Open 100 and 220 yards schools’ championships and the time for the 100 (9.8 seconds) was never broken, as metrics were brought in during the ’60s!

I started in 1958 in Sydney with my first job as an office boy in a paper-converting company. There I learnt the basics of printing before moving on to sales. This led me to ‘migrate’ to Melbourne (my Sydney mates thought I was ‘nuts’) where I continued in the same business. We first introduced printed carrier bags to Myers – and then the rest of Victoria followed.

A long-lost friend living in Melbourne introduced me to the world of advertising, and I joined one of the St Kilda Road agencies that had some well-known brands. One stand out was ACI, and we launched household names such as ‘pink Fiberglass batts’, the ‘glass can’ (later called the ‘stubby’) and Laminex. I also worked on the team that introduced the first drip-dry shirt (known as Gloweave) and the Polaroid instant camera – both of which were launched by the late Graham Kennedy on ‘In Melbourne Tonight’ in the early sixties. Other products in my group included the Beecham brands of Brylcream, Silvikrin and Eno.

A move back to Sydney for three years took place to further my experience in the advertising world. There I worked with Bryce Courtney (the creative director of McCann Erickson) on the Caltex, Mortein and Coca-Cola accounts. This was quite a fast-paced period, with daily deadlines – stress levels at least reduced by the ‘long lunches’.

A chance to move back to Melbourne came in 1965 to continue working on the ACI account and two years later I was introduced to a girl named Jill Abrecht. This certainly decided my ‘where-do-I-live’ dilemma and so began married life in Melbourne. Two sons later, I soon found that advertising and family life were not really a good mix for me. Thus, when a position in the family business became available, I offered myself as a candidate.

So began my career in jewellery. Eager to get my teeth into this ‘new thing’, I enjoyed the challenge of study, resulting in Diplomas of Gemmology and Diamond Technology. During this period I was gaining experience in the sales area of the business, including interstate trips (carrying our stock) to retailers as well as selling engagement rings to couples referred to us in our Little Collins Street office.

In the seventies and eighties I served on the Council of the Victorian Branch of the Gemmological Association (including one year as president) and held the position of Practical Lecturer in the Diploma of Diamond Studies for a number of years.

Following my time at the GAA, I moved to the Victorian Council of the Jewellers Association, where I was the convenor of their Grievance Committee for eight years, involving mediation in disputes between jewellers and customers throughout Victoria.

Although I’m cutting back on the hours (after nearly 50 years), I love my work and the way we are able to assist our customers with their jewellery needs – from a ‘check, clean and polish’ to a complicated remodel or a new engagement or wedding ring.

Hope to see you in the showroom one day and to help you with your jewellery requirements.
