Diamond – A symbol of love and romance

A diamond is the classic symbol of love and romance.  A timeless gift for a special celebration or simply a declaration of your love.

Diamonds are the ideal symbol of commitment

Whether it be a gift of a pendant, earrings or an engagement ring, diamonds have been associated with love and romance for centuries.

Durable and a gemstone on the market with the best ‘sparkle’ and ‘brilliance’, diamonds are the prefect choice for a stone that lasts a lifetime. Due to it’s extreme hardness, diamonds have the potential to become heirloom jewellery to last generations.

Value of diamonds

Diamonds come in variety of colours from pink and blue to yellow, brown, black and of course colourless. Some are rarer than others with pinks and blues the most highly prized. Pink diamonds have certainly increased in value due to their limited quantity. Argyle diamond mine in Western Australia (due to close in 2020) is the largest supplier to the world. Yellows and browns are less expensive but depending on the depth of colour can achieve a premium price. Blacks are the least expensive and are quite often heat treated to enhance the colour.

Diamonds Versatility

Due to the choice of colour, size, clarity and cut, diamonds can cater for all designs. Whether you choose an engagement three stone ring, a solitaire, a pair of earrings or a pendant there is an option to reflect your style and budget.

The suite of jewellery prior to remodelling

Elements of the old and new coming together

Wisdom from the bench

Wisdom from the bench – Eleanor Hawke

Earlier this year, one of our clients brought in a suite of jewellery that was passed down to her by her mother. She wished to remodel all the jewellery items into two special necklets she and her sister could wear and enjoy every day. The suite included a ring, pendant, bracelet and earrings. Each piece was made up of a large cushion cut garnet and surrounded by a halo of white sapphires and cubic zirconias, all in white gold settings and backed with rose gold filigree patterned plates. I thought these plates were too good to hide. Following a meeting with Peter, Greg and the client, it was decided that the delicate filigree plates would be used as a feature alongside the garnets, not hidden away as backings.

After Greg completed a quick sketch of the necklets, I began dismantling each of the items of jewellery, carefully removing the filigree sections and garnets, setting them aside for later use. As part of the new design, each garnet setting would be fitted with a hinged mechanism that would allow the necklet to be attached to a variety of chains, omegas, silk cords and neoprene, thus allowing the necklets to be dressed up or down depending on the client’s needs.

The laser welder was the preferred technique over the traditional method of soldering for constructing these necklets, as it allowed me to have perfect precision at every delicate join and removed all risks of damage to the fine filigree work when joining it to the ‘pillow’ backings.

This remodelling project really took me out of my comfort zone and pushed me to expand my usual construction methods. At times it was quite tricky and challenging, but after achieving two beautiful and unique items of jewellery, I was proud to stamp my hallmark on them. I hope our client is just as proud to wear them and hand them down through the family one day. It was a very rewarding experience to create a new family heirloom for someone that can be worn and enjoyed for many generations to come.

Creating an heirloom piece of jewellery

Creating an heirloom piece of jewellery often provides
extra challenges to the designing process. As an example,
a piece we recently created was designed around
the gemstones provided by our client. This collection
of Australian gemstones was of differing shapes, sizes
and colours.

‘…it is gratifying to be able to design these stories into pieces that, when made, can stimulate imaginations and memories.’

The natural Australian gemstones were solid Lightning Ridge
black opal, green, yellow and Inverell blue sapphires, along
with Argyle pink and yellow diamonds. All are found in
dry riverbeds and were mounted in white gold ‘rubbed in’
style settings. The outside yellow gold edges of the bracelet
represent the meandering rivers set around the ‘Red Centre’,
which is finished to represent the textured surface of the
unique red-coloured rock walls often found alongside our
waterholes and rivers. The clasp has been designed to also
articulate and move and represents a gold nugget.
The individual ‘articulated’ sections of the bracelet are all
different shapes and sizes, as are all the gemstones. After all,
no two rivers, territories or states, or even mobs or clans in
this big, wide, wonderful country of ours are identical.

This piece was designed and constructed using coloured golds
around existing gemstones. However there is another piece
being developed at the moment that is a remake using existing
components. It has been redesigned based on a recurring
theme within the existing pieces. Sections – which to date
have been hidden away at the back of the piece – are too
interesting to ignore and will be included in the new piece.

Most heirloom jewellery has a story to tell and it is gratifying
to be able to design these stories into pieces that, when
made, can stimulate imaginations and memories.

A commemorative piece of heirloom jewellery

Something so special can be given new life to ensure the memory lives on for many years to come.

A customer had a military ‘dog tag’ from World War 2 which he wished to commemorate.

This involved making a replica of the tag into a pendant, providing an item of jewellery the client could wear while preserving the original.

Made in rose gold (rather than the original in stainless steel) and later fitted with a bail so it could be worn as a pendant, this piece is the perfect item of mens jewellery giving new life to memories.

We are very lucky to participate in these joyful moments with families over the decades. It isn’t about the new items of jewellery but preserving the old.

Meet our Staff – Greg John our Master Jeweller

Greg began his apprenticeship in 1970, trained in the highly respected workshop of LW Designers under the keen eye of Master Jewellers, Kurt Lenk and Herbert Wiesboech. This was a period when the Melbourne jewellery industry was flourishing and Greg was fortunate to have the opportunity to learn a wide range of hand-making skills and manufacturing techniques.

It quickly became apparent to those who mixed with Greg in these formative years that here was a rare talent, eager to learn but also to think though processes and experiment with design. A shrewd observer, David Bird, was amongst those who became one of Greg’s major customers, opening up a market for his earliest designs on diamond and coloured stone rings to retail jewellers around Australia.

After some years running his own manufacturing retail businesses in Bentleigh and Mornington, Greg travelled to Queensland where he established and ran a large jewellery manufacturing facility in the rich gemstone area of Emerald in central Queensland.

Even at this distance, contact remained with the Bird business as Greg continued to produce jewellery for distribution to the Australian retail sector.

For family reasons Greg returned to Melbourne in 1988 and was eagerly recruited by highly respected jewellers, Precious Metals, and later, Makers Mark, where he established the workshop in the Collins street gallery. As evidence of how frequently paths cross in our industry, Greg for some time ran the jewellery workshop of Fred Robert Abrecht.

Greg has added to his hand-skills by enthusiastically studying all aspects of our industry, he is fascinated by gemstones and holds diplomas in both gemmology and diamond technology and is a qualified jewellery valuer.

Greg’s unique talent will gain wide recognition in years to come and many clients will proudly declare that their individual design bears his distinct makers mark as seen below.
