Opal – October’s Birthstone

Opal is a hydrated amorphous form of silica with a hardness rating of 5.5-6.5 on the Moh’s scale of hardness. Opals are found in many places around the world. Some of these locations include Ethiopia, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Indonesia and right here in Australia. Lightning Ridge is a small town in New South Wales that is famous for producing the prized black opal. Australia is also home to many other mines that source white opal and boulder opal.

For jewellery we recommend using opal in earrings and pendants.
